About the Author
Stephanie Sammartino McPherson wrote her first children's story in college. She enjoyed the process so much that she's never stopped writing. A former teacher and freelance newspaper writer, she has written twenty-eight books and numerous magazine stories. She especially enjoys writing about science and the human interest stories behind major discoveries. Her most recent book is a biography of Tim Berners-Lee, who invented the World Wide Web. Stephanie and her husband Richard live in Virginia but also call California home. They are the parents of two grown children.
School Library Journal, Series Made Simple
"These books showcase major scientific developments and the brutal competition behind the scenes. They are highly engaging accounts of researchers resorting to cheap shots, spying, and double crossing to take credit for pivotal discoveries. But they are also disturbing documentation of how ego can trump the greater good... Written cleanly and fluidly, these titles let the drama and occasional absurdity of the players' actions speak for themselves." --School Library Journal, Series Made Simple

From the opening page, audio and visual cues and easy-to-use tools help guide your students through the story. As the story begins, words are highlighted while they're read aloud. This type of word distinction better supports letter and word recognition skills, and keeps kids focused on the structure of how to read.

Page Turn Feature Page Turn:

Students can turn the page using the forward arrow, clicking and dragging, or clicking the bottom corner of the book depending on their comfort level or keyboard skills.

Single Word Repeat Feature Single Word Repeat:

A unique feature of the Lerner Interactive Book is single word playback. Readers can stop, click and re-listen to the pronunciation of any word on the page. If the book includes a glossary, readers can also click on the word for a full definition.

Dual Audio Speed Feature Dual Audio Speeds:

Because not all students read at the same pace, we've included dual audio speeds based on a words-per-minute pace recommended by reading and educational researchers for struggling and on-grade-level readers. Readers start at speed one, and can move to the faster speed as they gain confidence.

Player Controls Toolbar:

Each button on the player uses color, text and easy-to-recognize icons so even the earliest of readers feel comfortable using the controls. Each tool remains consistent through all our titles, so kids can focus on reading.

Interactive Whiteboard Tools Built-in Interactive Whiteboard Tools:

Teachers, parents and librarians can use the interactive whiteboard tools to highlight or circle specific portions of the book for one-on-one, small group, or whole class instruction.

Additional Materials Additional Materials:

We've included extra material and support to help extend the learning experience. Kids can play a game or activity that relates to the story they just read, or take a simple 5-question quiz to check for understanding.
