Connie Goldsmith writes books about history, health, and science for older children. She has fourteen children's books to her credit, with another coming in 2015. Her works include Bombs Over Bikini, about the U.S. nuclear testing program in the Marshall Islands, Traumatic Brain Injury, and books about malaria, influenza, antibiotic resistant infections, and the California Gold Rush, among others. Currently, she is working on several nonfiction and fiction projects.

She is a big fan of today's young adult and middle-grade novels and reads one or two of them each week. Over the past twelve years, she has reviewed more than 700 children's books for a regional parenting publication, and many others for the New York Journal of Books. She has more than 200 articles published in various genres. These include California Kids, the children's magazines Cricket and Highlights, and the SCBWI Bulletin and Children's Writer's and Illustrator's Market.

As an RN with a master's degree in health, Ms. Goldsmith also writes continuing education articles for nurses on a wide variety of professional and disease-specific topics. She writes a pediatric health column for a regional parenting publication, and maintains a health blog on her website at www.conniegoldsmith.com.

She lives near Sacramento, California where she hikes along the American River, sweats out the miles on her treadmill, and visits with family and friends between bouts of frenzied research and writing.

"This series mimics USA Today in its readability, though the books' length and breadth render them more suited to fact-finding than to pleasure reading. The language is straightforward and objective." --School Library Journal, Series Made Simple

Lerner Interactive Books Screenshot 1

Lerner Interactive Books introduce students to knowledge areas in core grade-level curriculum in an engaging format. With titles that span curriculum themes from pre-K - 5th grade, Lerner Interactive Books give readers a digital option for reading that allows them to read, hear, and interact in a way that will engage and motivate them to read more and more often. It's a fast path to deepening students' love of reading and learning.

From the opening page, audio and visual cues and easy-to-use tools help guide your students through the story. As the story begins, words are highlighted while they're read aloud. This type of word distinction better supports letter and word recognition skills, and keeps kids focused on the structure of how to read.

Page Turn Feature Page Turn:

Students can turn the page using the forward arrow, clicking and dragging, or clicking the bottom corner of the book depending on their comfort level or keyboard skills.

Single Word Repeat Feature Single Word Repeat:

A unique feature of the Lerner Interactive Book is single word playback. Readers can stop, click and re-listen to the pronunciation of any word on the page. If the book includes a glossary, readers can also click on the word for a full definition.

Dual Audio Speed Feature Dual Audio Speeds:

Because not all students read at the same pace, we've included dual audio speeds based on a words-per-minute pace recommended by reading and educational researchers for struggling and on-grade-level readers. Readers start at speed one, and can move to the faster speed as they gain confidence.

Player Controls Toolbar:

Each button on the player uses color, text and easy-to-recognize icons so even the earliest of readers feel comfortable using the controls. Each tool remains consistent through all our titles, so kids can focus on reading.

Interactive Whiteboard Tools Built-in Interactive Whiteboard Tools:

Teachers, parents and librarians can use the interactive whiteboard tools to highlight or circle specific portions of the book for one-on-one, small group, or whole class instruction.

Additional Materials Additional Materials:

We've included extra material and support to help extend the learning experience. Kids can play a game or activity that relates to the story they just read, or take a simple 5-question quiz to check for understanding.
