About the Imprint

Kar-Ben PublishingWelcome to Kar-Ben Publishing, a division of Lerner Publishing Group. In 1975, two friends, Judyth Groner and Madeline Wikler, founded Kar-Ben Copies Inc., to publish the children's Passover haggadah they had created. My Very Own Haggadah, still in print after more than 35 years, has gone on to sell more than 2 million copies. The two friends named the company after their youngest children, Karen and Ben. While carbon copies soon went the way of the rotary dial phone, Kar-Ben Copies became synonymous with quality Jewish content books for children.

Over the next 27 years, Kar-Ben published more than 150 books for Jewish children and their families, featuring the creative work of more than 60 authors and illustrators. In recognition of their "outstanding contributions to the field of Jewish children's literature," Kar-Ben's founders were awarded the prestigious "Body of Work Award" by the Association of Jewish Libraries.

In 2001, Kar-Ben was purchased by Lerner Publishing Group. Under Lerner's leadership, Kar-Ben now publishes up to 20 new titles of Jewish content each year, growing a significant Jewish library for children and families. Our offerings have branched out from pre-school and young children's works into middle school fiction and nonfiction titles. Kar-Ben's many award-winning children's titles cover such topics as Jewish holidays, folktales, Bible stories, as well as contemporary subjects. Many have become popular classics, from The Mouse in the Matzah Factory and the well-known Sammy Spider series, to the award-winning Six Million Paper Clips and many others.

We are pleased to welcome you to our website.

Note from the Editor

Dear Kar-Ben Reader,

Whether on a Jewish or non-Jewish topic, a good children's book is one that children, parents, and educators can all enjoy and learn from together. As the American Jewish community continues to evolve, Kar-Ben takes seriously its commitment to the publication of quality stories on a wide range of Jewish topics. We want our books to not only teach important lessons about being Jewish in today's world, but also to bring the joy of Judaism to families no matter what their level of Jewish practice.

Sincerely,

Joni Sussman, Publisher, on behalf of the entire Kar-Ben Publishing team
