Review Excerpts:
  • "These lively, fast-paced classic folktales, in a format that is easy to read, will appeal to young readers in grades two through five. Colorful illustrations matched to the text and a glossary also assist new readers in developing their skills. The West African tales in Anansi and the Box of Stories will mesmerize and intrigue youngsters and the vivid illustrations are a strength of this volume. Young people will like the sky god character, Nyame, who owns all the stories in the world and keeps them in a box in his kingdom in the clouds. Anansi has different ideas and thinks the stories should be shared with everyone—and the story unfolds. In The Dragon Emperor, adapted by the noted Chinese-American poet Wang Ping, the emperor is about to become a powerful ruler until Chi You attempts to overthrow him. Each story has suspense and conflict, just the right ingredients to keep the interest of young readers. The Mexican folktale La Llorona is rendered as a scary ghost tale. The Jewish folktale The Magic Pomegranate is about a contest between three brothers."
    --MultiCultural Review
  • "These newest additions to the series are adaptations of folktales from around the world (African, Mexican, Chinese, and Jewish.) Each retelling is designed to appeal to those children who may have high interest but lower reading levels. Authors and illustrators vary. For example, the illustrator of Anansi and the Box of Stories has done an authentic job representing the African culture with Kente clothing and the flora and fauna of the region, and her paintings show a lot of movement that are sure to appeal to male readers. However, I was a bit turned off by the dark color palette throughout. Touted as On My Own Folklore, the size of the books themselves is more conducive to read alone than read aloud. It might be helpful to read aloud another version of each tale first and then have these available for a compare/contrast exercise. They are worthy of shelf space for the independent reader aspect alone. Recommended."
    --Library Media Connection
  • "In these stories, trickster Anansi wins a box of stories from the sky god; the Yellow Emperor fights the Black Dragon; a young man wins a princess's hand with his magic pomegranate; and a self-centered girl becomes the ghost La Llorona. Each tale is paired with an illustration style that nicely reflects the culture. Back matter provides further information. Review covers these On My Own Folklore titles: Anansi and the Box of Stories, The Tale of La Llorona, The Magic Pomegranate, and The Dragon Emperor."
